Holy basil ethanol extract prevents skin aging

In a study conducted by researchers in Thailand, Taiwan, and Austria, they discovered a potential source of anti-aging compounds in topical preparations of Ocimum sanctum. This famous "herbal queen" is not only widely used in cooking, but also in medical applications. It is reported to have beneficial effects on bronchitis, bronchial asthma, malaria, diarrhea, dysentery, various skin diseases, arthritis, eye pain, chronic fever and insect bites. These properties are attributed to its various ingredients, including eugenol, ursolic acid, linalool and rosmarinic acid.

Basil is a very promising plant for producing natural skin care products. This is because of its effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. However, before this report, there is no evidence that it has anti-aging properties, including potential inhibition of collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase.

The study, published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products, investigated the potential use of holy basil as a source of bioactive compounds in skin care products. For this, they first extracted extracts from herbs, and then tested their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. According to holy basil's ability to inhibit collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase, its anti-aging properties are evaluated. When these enzymes are active, they break down collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid respectively, helping to maintain youthful and healthy skin. As part of the study, the researchers also evaluated the ingredients of holy basil extract.

Through these tests, the researchers found that the ethanol extract of holy basil can significantly inhibit the activities of collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase. These indicate that the herb has anti-aging properties. In addition, the research team also proved that holy basil has effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. All these beneficial activities are attributed to rosmarinic acid, which proved to be the main component of ethanol extracts.

Overall, the results of this study indicate that holy basil can be used as an herbal remedy to combat skin damage such as wrinkles. This is due to its effective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects, which are attributed to rosmarinic acid.
