Sinopec and BASF expand production capacity of neopentyl glycol in Nanjing
Yangzi Petrochemical-BASF Co., Ltd. (Yangzi Petrochemical-BASF), a joint venture between Sinopec and BASF, has expanded the production capacity of neopentyl glycol. The device is located in a world-class integrated base in Nanjing, Jiangsu. It was put into operation in 2015 and has an annual production capacity of 40,000 tons. After the expansion is completed in August 2020, the total annual production capacity will reach 80,000 tons.
Mr. Hong Cambridge, Chairman of Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical Co., Ltd. and Chairman of Yangzi Petrochemical-BASF Co., Ltd., said: “Sinopec and BASF have maintained close cooperation for many years. The cooperative relationship is in line with the high-quality development direction of the Chinese government for industrial restructuring, transformation and upgrading."
Dr. Stephan Kothrade, President and Chairman of BASF Greater China, said: “This capacity expansion marks another milestone in the long-term cooperative relationship between Sinopec and BASF, and further strengthens both parties’ commitment to enhance local production capacity. In order to actively respond to the growing demand for environmentally friendly powder coatings from Chinese customers."

Neopentyl glycol is a unique polyol. Due to its high chemical and thermal stability, it has excellent performance in many end applications, especially in the production of polyester and alkyd resins for various coatings and plastics. It is an important raw material for the production of polyester fiber resins, which are used to produce coatings, unsaturated polyester resins, alkyd resins, lubricants and plasticizers. As one of the market leaders, BASF has neopentyl glycol production bases in Ludwigshafen (Germany), Freeport (United States), Nanjing (China) and Jilin (China).
