The application of water-based coatings highlights social responsibility

ECHEMI 2020-10-26

Water-based paint is an emulsified emulsion film-forming configuration paint. The types of water-based paints include water-diluted, water-soluble and water-dispersible paint. Any paint that uses water as a solvent or dispersion medium can be called a water-based paint. In layman's terms, water is used as a diluent, and you only need to add water commonly used in daily life. This avoids the air pollution caused by solvent-based paints (the organic solvents of this type of paint contain harmful substances such as benzene, ketones, esters, ethers, formaldehyde, lead, chromium, etc.), which greatly reduces the harm to humans Especially in interior wall coatings. This reflects the strong social responsibility of water-based coatings

The social responsibility of water-based coatings is also reflected in these aspects:

Environmentally friendly: water-based paint not only replaces volatile organic solvents in the production process, but also paint tools can be washed with water during use, reducing the consumption of cleaning solvents.

Low cost: The choice of water-based solvent not only reduces the storage risk, but also saves the cost of raw materials.

High safety: The flammable and explosive materials of solvent-based coatings have the risk of fire and explosion accidents during storage and use. The production and use of water-based coatings reduces the demand for flammable and explosive materials and greatly reduces the risk.

Since 2014, national policies for water-based coatings have emerged one after another, which has greatly promoted the development of water-based coatings in my country. "Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings" HG/T4761-2014, "Waterborne Epoxy Anticorrosive Coatings" HG /T4759-2014, "Waterborne Acrylic Resin Coatings" HG/T4758-2014 and other three water-based industrial coating product standards, in 2017 "" Policy documents such as the 13th Five-Year Plan for the Prevention and Control of Volatile Organic Compounds Pollution and the 2018 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Surrounding Areas 2018-2019 Comprehensive Air Pollution Control Action Plan (Draft for Comment) and other policy documents VOCs of type coatings, inks, adhesives and other projects have been specifically restricted, which greatly enhances the "social status" of water-based coatings.

It is expected that the domestic coatings market will maintain an overall growth rate of 7% in the next 3-5 years. The market size is expected to exceed 600 billion yuan in 2022, and the coatings market has a bright future. According to analysis, the apparent demand for water-based coatings in my country in 2016 was about 1.9 million tons, accounting for less than 10% of the coatings industry. With the expansion of the application range of water-based coatings, it is predicted that my country's water-based coatings will account for 20% within five years. By 2022, the market demand for water-based coatings in China will reach 7.21 million tons.

On September 12, 2013, the State Council issued the "Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan" that clearly stated the promotion of the use of water-based coatings. The consumption of coatings in the first and second-tier cities has gradually stabilized, and the rigid demand for coatings in the third and fourth-tier cities is huge. Moreover, China's per capita paint consumption of less than ten kilograms is still far lower than that of developed countries such as Europe, America and Japan. In the long run, the growth space of China's paint market is still large. On September 13, 2017, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments issued the "Thirteenth Five-Year" Volatile Organic Compound Pollution Prevention and Control Work Plan. The "Plan" requires that control should be strengthened from the source and the use of low (no) VOCs content original auxiliary Materials, install efficient treatment facilities, and strengthen waste gas collection. "Oil to water" has become an important development direction of the coating industry in the next few years.
