Thirty people in Spain have been poisoned by cinnamon

At least 30 people in Spain have been infected with Clostridium perfringens, suspected to be linked to cinnamon from Vietnam, according to Food Safety News Network.

Symptoms reported in these patients include vomiting and diarrhoea.

Spain's Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) said it had been told by officials in Madrid that Clostridium perfringens had been found in a brand of cinnamon powder.

Especias Pedroza is currently being recalled. The cinnamon powder is packed in 700g plastic containers. Products with lot number A220079 have a shelf life until December 31, 2023, and products with lot number A222605 have a shelf life until February 28, 2026.

The alert was issued through the Rapid Information Exchange Coordination System (SCIRI) and the Health Alert and Emergency Coordination Center to verify the withdrawal of affected products from the market and to report on possible associated illnesses.

AESAN advised consumers not to eat the affected products.
