What is Cellulose Gum Made from: Ingredients & Steps
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is made up of an anhydro glucose unit with an average of 0.2-1.5 carboxymethyl groups (-CH2COOH) attached to it. The manufacturing process involves two main steps: alkalinization and etherification.
During the first step, cellulose pulp is dispersed in an alkali solution, typically sodium hydroxide (5-50%), to produce alkali cellulose. This reaction results in the formation of cellulose sodium salt and water.
In the second step, alkali cellulose is etherified by reacting it with up to 30% sodium mono chloroacetate in an alcohol-water solution. The mixture is heated (50-75°C) and stirred during the process. The reaction between sodium mono chloroacetate and sodium hydroxide results in the formation of sodium chloride and sodium mono chloroacetate. This is followed by the formation of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose through the reaction between alkali cellulose and sodium mono-chloroacetate.
The degree of substitution (DS) of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can be adjusted by controlling the reaction conditions and the use of organic solvents such as isopropanol.
