Shell will acquire Enerkem's renewable chemicals and biofuel plant​

According to ICIS news on January 12, according to Kemicalinfo, Shell will hold a 40% stake in a waste-to-fuel plant using technology developed by Enerkem, a leading Canadian clean technology company.

Enerkem announced the project in December 2020 and finalized a commercial agreement.

This commercial-scale facility of approximately 875 million Canadian dollars (US$686 million) will be built in Valence, Quebec, using Enerkem’s proprietary technology to produce low-carbon fuels and renewable chemicals from non-recyclable waste.

The first phase of the facility is scheduled to start trial operation in 2023.

Key investments in the plant come from Shell, Enerkem, Suncor, Proman and Hydro-Quebec of Quebec, as well as the governments of Quebec and Canada.

Once completed, the plant will process more than 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste and wood waste each year, and produce nearly 125 million liters of low-carbon fuel annually.
