How to Produce Nitrogen Gas? Ultimate Guide

Do you know how to produce nitrogen gas? Well, nitrogen gas is the most abundant element in the earth's atmosphere, comprising approximately 78% of air. It has many practical uses, ranging from commercial and industrial applications to medical uses to food preparation and storage; however, one of the easiest ways to use nitrogen gas in your day-to-day life involves producing it through chemical reactions at home. Collect Urine

Collecting urine is quite easy. In fact, you already do it every day. Don't just let your urine go down your drain! Save it so that you can use it later. It's important that your urine is warm and runny before continuing with the experiment because nitrogen has a low boiling point.

 

To create warm and runny urine, stir up some of your collected morning pee until it reaches room temperature-about 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius). Make sure that you don't include any toilet paper remnants or contaminants such as soap or deodorant soap residues. For best results, collect your first morning pee of the day. The more concentrated your urine is, however, the more nitrogen gas you will produce.

 

How to Produce Nitrogen Gas? Boil it

If you're trying to produce anhydrous ammonia, leave it at that. If you want nitrogen gas, bring your pot of water up to a rolling boil (100-110 degrees Celsius). Hold it there for 30 minutes. This process is known as boiling off (or out) water vapor: when water boils, its molecules escape into a gaseous state-at least until all of them are gone and you're left with just nitrogen and whatever else is left from your original solution.

 

You can speed up or slow down how quickly your solution turns into gas by adjusting how hot you heat it and how long you keep it there-but whatever happens, that bubbling mess of blue will turn clear once all its water has boiled off. That's how you know it's done.

 

There's no need to add anything but water at first-it will boil away on its own once you get things going. Once everything is done, however, be sure to let it cool back down before proceeding to the next step! You don't want any extra heat on hand when you go about separating your nitrogen gas from what's left behind. Heat speeds up chemical reactions - which means we'd end up producing more ammonia than we intended!

 

Add Copper Sulfate Solution

Do you know how to produce nitrogen gas? Well, after 24 hours, add 2-3 drops of concentrated copper sulfate solution into each glass tube. Copper sulfate is used because it helps convert nitrogen gas into ammonia gas (NH). It's also important to not get any copper sulfate solution on your skin or on your clothes since it can stain.

 

Ammonia will start to bubble out of your tubes within a few minutes, and if you want some more action with reactions, you can gently squeeze an end of one of your glass tubes with a forceps. The reaction will be immediate! The reaction starts slowly and then builds up as gases become trapped inside your tube. When they start expanding too much they'll push against each other and make your tube expand like a balloon.

 

Add Ammonium Chloride Solution

Add an ammonium chloride solution of 0.025 mole/L or another source of ammonia. Make sure you are doing everything at room temperature, since reactions that involve ammonia work best at around 25 degrees Celsius or 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Stir occasionally, but don't let it sit for too long.

 

If it sits for more than 20 minutes, some of your nitrogen will convert into a gas and escape through the top of your container, while most of it will turn into a liquid layer below. This is because NH3 is highly soluble in water and less soluble in acetic acid-dichloromethane mixture.

 

How to Produce Nitrogen Gas? Bottling the Gas

Now that you have all of your nitrogen gas, how do you store it? You might not know it, but empty soda bottles make great storage containers for nitrogen gas. After boiling off your HCl, simply use a funnel and transfer your gas into one or more empty soda bottles. If there are air bubbles in your bottle after transferring, give them time to work themselves out through diffusion - they'll be gone soon enough. While not quite as durable as some other plastics, empty soda bottles will hold up reasonably well if you're gentle with them and always remember: they're only plastic!
