China's Fixed Asset Investment Shows Moderate Growth in the First Eight Months of 2023

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China on September 15th, fixed asset investment (excluding rural households) in China reached 32.7042 trillion yuan from January to August, with a year-on-year growth of 3.2%. Within this period, investment in the manufacturing sector increased by 5.9%, while investment in the chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry grew by 13.2%.

Breaking it down by sectors, investment in the primary industry reached 692.8 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period last year. Investment in the secondary industry amounted to 10.252 trillion yuan, showing a growth of 8.8%. Investment in the tertiary industry reached 21.7593 trillion yuan, experiencing a modest increase of 0.9%.

Within the secondary industry, industrial investment grew by 8.8%. Specifically, investment in mining increased by 2.0%, while investment in the production and supply of electricity, heat, gas, and water surged by 26.5%.

Within the tertiary industry, infrastructure investment (excluding the production and supply of electricity, heat, gas, and water) grew by 6.4% year-on-year. Investment in railway transportation increased by 23.4%, water management saw a growth of 4.8%, road transportation investment grew by 1.9%, and investment in public facility management declined by 0.6%.

In terms of regional distribution, investment in the eastern region of China grew by 5.6% year-on-year, while the central region saw a decline of 1.6%. Investment in the western region decreased by 0.6%, and the northeastern region experienced a decline of 3.1%.

Analyzing investment types, fixed asset investment in domestic enterprises grew by 3.4% year-on-year, while investment from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan businesses decreased by 3.0%. Foreign-funded enterprises, on the other hand, saw an increase of 2.7% in fixed asset investment.

Despite the mixed performance across sectors, China's fixed asset investment demonstrates a moderate growth trend, with the manufacturing and chemical industries showing resilience. The regional variations in investment highlight the ongoing economic restructuring efforts and development imbalances within different regions of China.
