LG Chem and Huayou Cobalt to Jointly Build Electric Vehicle Battery Material Factory in Morocco
On September 24th, LG Chem, a South Korean chemical company, announced a partnership with Huayou Cobalt to establish a joint venture for the construction of an electric vehicle battery material factory in Morocco. The factory is scheduled to commence operations in 2026 and aims to produce 50,000 metric tons of lithium iron phosphate cathode materials annually.
LG Chem stated that the lithium iron phosphate cathode materials produced at the Moroccan factory will be supplied to the North American market and will benefit from subsidies under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. The company also disclosed an additional investment plan in collaboration with Huayou Cobalt to build a lithium conversion plant in Morocco, with the goal of commencing mass production by 2025 and achieving an annual capacity of 52,000 metric tons of lithium.
Furthermore, LG Chem announced its intention to construct a precursor plant in Indonesia. This move aligns with the company's strategic plans to expand its presence in the rapidly growing electric vehicle battery market.
