Sophim Raises €20 Million to Boost Production, Including Plant-based Squalane

Sophim 2023-10-17

Sophim, a family-owned company specializing in natural ingredients for the cosmetics and personal care sector, recently concluded a successful funding round, securing €20 million. This substantial investment will facilitate the doubling of the company's production capacity across two industrial facilities, one situated in Peyruis, Southern France, and the other in Almeria, Spain. Additionally, this infusion of capital is expected to accelerate the company's global expansion efforts. The funding round, which totaled €20 million, saw exclusive participation from Smalt Capital, complemented by financial backing and support in the form of recovery bonds.

Sophim's decision to secure this funding comes at an opportune moment. The cosmetic and personal care market has seen a notable shift towards the adoption of naturally derived squalane solutions. Sophim's olive-based Phytosqualan (INCI: Squalane) is poised for success in this evolving landscape, promising a consistent supply of this crucial ingredient to the industry. Cécile Pinatel, the Marketing and Communication Manager at Sophim, expressed the company's commitment to becoming a dependable supplier of plant-derived squalane. Furthermore, Pinatel revealed that the company is actively exploring additional sources for plant-based squalane.

Alexis Margnat, the Managing Director of Sophim, emphasized the importance of not only expanding production capacity but also adopting greener practices to reduce energy costs and minimize byproducts. The company, for instance, chose to enhance its existing intermediate processes, a decision driven by environmental considerations. While Margnat acknowledged that this approach represents a more substantial upfront investment, he emphasized that the primary goal is not just to increase production but to produce in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.

Sophim's diverse range of ingredients is currently distributed in over 60 countries. Operating in France, Spain, and Asia, the company is committed to assisting customers in their transition towards more natural products that are sourced from renewable and competitive origins. The company's flagship product, Phytosqualan, holds the prestigious COSMOS certification, is entirely of vegetable origin, and adheres to the principles of the circular economy. Sophim achieves this by recovering olive fatty acids from a local supply, thereby reducing the carbon footprint, an approach aimed at making better use of materials that were previously underutilized.

Alexis Margnat emphasized the company's unwavering commitment to sustainable development, stating, "In our rapidly expanding environment, sustainable development must remain a priority. Ecological responsibility is at the core of our values and has always been an integral part of our business development."
