Olaplex Grapples with Persistent Sales Decline in Q3 Despite Marginal Improvement
Olaplex, the renowned hair care brand, has encountered another quarter of declining sales in 2023, marking a consecutive trend. Q3 sales plummeted by 30%, amounting to $123.6 million, accompanied by a substantial drop in net income by 66.4% and profits by 35.6%.

The most significant decline was witnessed in Olaplex's Specialty Retail division, where sales contracted by 41.8% to $43.2 million. Professional sales also took a hit, decreasing by 23.3% to $48.3 million, while the Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) division shrank by 18.2% to $32.1 million.
The company attributes this performance dip to persistently weak demand for its products. Despite the sales slump, interim CEO John Bilbrey expresses encouragement at the marginal improvement from the previous quarter's sales crash of 48.2% to $109.2 million. Bilbrey remains optimistic about income recovery in the latter half of the year, driven by additional investments into the brand.
Bilbrey, who has assumed the role of interim CEO, will continue in this capacity until Amanda Baldwin, currently with Supergoop, steps in as the replacement for former CEO JuE Wong in 2024. Wong, who served Olaplex for over three years, stepped down in October amidst a challenging financial year marked by declining sales and a lowered full-year forecast.
Olaplex faced further setbacks in the form of lawsuits filed in February 2023, alleging adverse effects of its No. 0 to No. 9 products, including hair loss and scalp blisters. However, on July 11, the court granted Olaplex’s motion to sever, dismissing all but the first named plaintiff. The remaining plaintiff later voluntarily dismissed her claims without prejudice on July 24, indicating a complex legal journey for the brand.
