Sri Lanka Abandons 2024 Egg and Chicken Imports Due to Increased Domestic Production
According to the "Daily Financial Times" report on September 26, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Agriculture has announced the cancellation of plans to import eggs and chicken next year. This decision stems from the substantial growth in local egg and chicken production, reflecting the government's commitment to collaborating with domestic producers to lower prices and enhance production, with the ultimate goal of achieving self-sufficiency within Sri Lanka's poultry industry.
Agriculture Minister Amaraweera explained that the previous surge in egg and chicken prices had enticed many individuals to enter the poultry sector. Given the current production surge, it is anticipated that egg and poultry prices will gradually decrease in the upcoming months. This marks a significant step toward self-reliance in Sri Lanka's poultry industry.
