Dow Chemical Company Releases Q3 2023 Financial Report

ECHEMI 2023-10-25

On October 24th, Dow Chemical Company announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2023. The company reported a net sales revenue of $10.73 billion, representing a year-on-year decline of 23.98%. Operating profit stood at $302 million, marking a significant decrease of over 60%. Under the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the earnings per share were reported as $0.42, while the operating earnings per share were $0.48. These figures reflect a decline compared to $1.11 in the same period last year and $0.75 in the previous quarter.

The further decline in Dow's operating revenue indicates the impact of a slowdown in global macroeconomic activities, resulting in decreased sales across various business segments. The company's revenue declined by 24% compared to the previous year and 6% sequentially. Although Dow observed an increase in product sales volume, the decline in product prices in certain regions offset the growth contribution from sales volume.

In terms of product sales volume, there was a 6% decline compared to the previous year, primarily driven by lower sales of polyethylene and energy products. However, when compared to the second quarter, the third quarter showed a 3% increase in sales volume. The prices of Dow's products experienced an 18% year-on-year decline, with price decreases observed in all business segments and regions, primarily due to lower raw material and energy costs. Sequentially, prices decreased by 7%, mainly attributable to price declines in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India.

Under GAAP, the net income was reported as $327 million. The operating income before taxes was $626 million, a decrease from $1.2 billion in the same period last year, primarily driven by the decline in regional prices. Sequentially, there was a decrease of $259 million, primarily due to lower sales volumes in packaging and specialty plastics, partially offset by growth in industrial intermediates and basic chemicals, as well as performance materials and coatings.

Jim Fitterling, Chairman and CEO of Dow, commented on the quarter, stating, "In the third quarter, the Dow team continued to advance our long-term strategy while taking proactive measures to reduce costs and maintain maximum cash generation in the face of challenging macro environments. Despite higher prior-year raw material costs, we continue to take targeted actions to deliver $1 billion in cost savings in 2023. Operating cash flow reached $1.7 billion, increasing by $311 million sequentially, and we returned over $615 million to shareholders, reflecting our ongoing commitment to disciplined and balanced capital allocation."

Dow's financial report exceeded analysts' expectations, with higher revenue and earnings per share than projected. Following the release of the report, Dow's stock rose 2.1% to $49.24 per share.
