Price Trends of Chemicals and Key Raw Materials in the Domestic Coatings Industry in October
Introduction:
The domestic chemical industry in China experienced a downward trend in October, which had a significant impact on the prices of key raw materials used in the coatings industry. This article provides an overview of the price movements of various chemicals and their implications for the coatings market. While prices for most materials declined, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) witnessed marginal increases.
Acrylic Acid Butyl Ester:
The price of acrylic acid butyl ester experienced a substantial decline in October. Slower downstream replenishment after the holiday season, coupled with high inventory levels, led to a rapid decline in market prices. Although the price of n-butanol, a major raw material, briefly increased, the overall cost pressure on acrylic acid butyl ester resulted in a shift from profitability to loss for industry players. Consequently, production facilities reduced their operating rates, leading to a gradual decrease in market supply. The price of acrylic acid butyl ester dropped below the 9,000 yuan/ton mark and reached as low as 8,500-8,600 yuan/ton.
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA):
Prior to the October holiday, the stocking of MMA was not significant. However, after the holiday, some traders showed a clear intention to sell, leading to price pressure. As negotiations shifted downwards, the market saw a decline in prices; however, in the latter part of the month, the downward momentum slowed. With cost support, the willingness for significant price decreases in the trading market diminished. Despite consistent demand from downstream industries, the market remained weak throughout the month. By the end of October, mainstream prices in East China had fallen to 10,350-10,400 yuan/ton.
Xylene:
Xylene prices in China declined overall in October due to weak demand and the influence of related products. In the mainstream markets of East China, prices decreased from 8,185 yuan/ton at the beginning of the month to 7,380 yuan/ton. Early in the month, prices reached a low point but rebounded due to post-holiday replenishment and increased trading volumes. However, sustained weak demand, discounted sales from refineries, and the downward trend of related products led to continuous price declines. Pressure from gasoline and PX, the two major downstream products, further contributed to the downward pressure on xylene prices. Additionally, increased supply of toluene during the month added to the downward pressure on xylene prices.

My training only goes up until September 2021, and I don't have information on specific price trends or updates in the domestic coatings industry in October 2023. It's best to consult industry reports, market analysis, or reliable sources for the most up-to-date information on price trends of chemicals and key raw materials in the coatings industry.
