Schrodinger: Pioneering Computational Chemistry and Successful Collaborations in Drug Discovery
Schrodinger, founded in 1990 by Columbia University chemistry professors Richard Friesner and Bill Goddard, has been a prominent player in the field of computational chemistry and drug discovery for over 30 years. The company specializes in developing advanced computational methods and providing software services to pharmaceutical companies, with a focus on compound screening.
One of Schrodinger's notable success stories is its collaboration with Nimbus Therapeutics. Nimbus was founded in 2009 by Bruce Booth, an Atlas Venture partner, and Ramy Farid, the CEO of Schrodinger. Together, they took a unique approach to drug discovery by combining computational chemistry with other techniques, such as high-resolution protein structure data. This collaboration allowed them to accelerate project timelines and facilitate clinical research and development.
The partnership between Schrodinger and Nimbus proved fruitful, with notable achievements in the form of drug acquisitions. In 2016, Gilead Sciences acquired the ACC inhibitor NDI-976, which resulted in a significant financial return for Schrodinger. Similarly, in late 2022, Takeda acquired a late TYK2 inhibitor from Nimbus for a substantial upfront payment, further contributing to Schrodinger's success.
Schrodinger has also been involved in co-founding other biotechnology companies. In 2015, along with Polaris Partners and TASpringer, Schrodinger co-founded Morphic Therapeutic. Morphic focuses on developing a new generation of oral integrin therapies, derived from the technology of Dr. Tim Springer, a professor at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. Morphic has received investments from Pfizer and AbbVie, and its integrin inhibitors are being developed for the treatment of fibrosis diseases.
Another notable co-founded company is Ajax Therapeutics, established in 2019. Ajax applies computational chemistry and structure-based techniques to develop novel small molecules for hematologic malignancies. The company has raised $40 million in funding and is currently in the preclinical stage of developing a next-generation type II JAK2 inhibitor.
Sodi Biological, co-founded by Dr. Raymond Stevens and Rich Friesner, focuses on G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) targets for developing oral small molecule therapies for metabolic and pulmonary diseases. Sodi Bio has received significant investments, including from BVF Partners, Eight Roads Ventures, and Qiming Venture Capital. The company went public in February and has a promising clinical pipeline, including an oral GLP-1R inhibitor for the treatment of type II diabetes and obesity.
Schrodinger's success extends beyond its co-founded companies. The company has established research and development collaborations with more than 10 multinational companies, including BMS, Otsuka Pharmaceutical, Sanofi, and Eli Lilly, covering various therapeutic areas such as oncology, metabolism, and immune disorders.
In 2018, Schrodinger partnered with Wuxi to form Faxian Therapeutics, aiming to accelerate the drug discovery process. The company's listing has also paved the way for other AI pharmaceutical companies, including AbCellera, Recursion, Absci, and Relay Therapeutics.
The AI drug discovery landscape continues to evolve, with new companies being founded by experienced executives. Superluminal Medicines, founded by former executives from RACapitalManagement and Schrodinger, raised a significant seed funding round to develop drugs targeting G-protein-coupled receptors. Enveda Biosciences, led by founder Viswa Colluru, leverages large-scale metabolomics and artificial intelligence to expedite natural drug discovery.
Schrodinger's long-standing presence and collaborations have solidified its position as a leader in computational chemistry and drug discovery. With a track record of successful partnerships and a diverse portfolio of co-founded companies, Schrodinger continues to contribute to advancements in the field of pharmaceutical research and development.
