Gerresheimer and Rezemo Pioneer Sustainable Packaging: Bio-Based Closures Meet Endlessly Recyclable Glass Jars
In a groundbreaking collaboration, glass manufacturer Gerresheimer and German start-up Rezemo have united their expertise to introduce a range of sustainable packaging solutions. These innovations, devoid of plastic or aluminum, cater to the realms of cosmetics, food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals. The alliance seeks to elevate eco-conscious manufacturing and design, aligning with a shared commitment to sustainability.

The glassmaker has teamed up with the German start-up to offer sustainable packaging solutions free from plastic or aluminium for cosmetics, food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals.
Stefan Rieder, Global Senior Vice President Commercial at Gerresheimer Moulded Glass, underscores the shared vision, stating, "By joining forces, we aim to further reduce the environmental footprint of primary packaging while providing customers with innovative and appealing solutions."
At the heart of this collaboration is the utilization of Rezemo's bio-based Forewood material, a revolutionary blend of wood fibers and plant-based binders. Gerresheimer touts this sustainable alternative to traditional materials as not only environmentally friendly but also boasting exceptional performance characteristics. The material allows for diverse design options, enabling customization in terms of surface structure and color.
Stefan Zender, co-founder of Rezemo, emphasizes the appeal of these bio-based closures when paired with glass containers. "They are biodegradable, recyclable, and align with the global movement towards reducing single-use plastics," he states. Julian Reitze, the second co-founder of Rezemo, elaborates on the cutting-edge nature of the material, which combines wood fibers and biopolymers.
In a strategic move, Gerresheimer introduces the initial offering within its cosmetic packaging portfolio—a 50ml glass jar paired with a Forewood closure. Tailored for skincare products, both the jar and closure are customizable through various decoration techniques and color designs. This marks a pivotal step towards sustainable packaging solutions that resonate with environmentally conscious consumers, reinforcing the collective commitment to reducing the impact of single-use plastics.
As the beauty and packaging industries continue to evolve, this collaboration stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovative materials and design thinking. The marriage of Gerresheimer's glass expertise with Rezemo's bio-based ingenuity sets the stage for a new era in sustainable packaging solutions across diverse sectors.
