Is Anpro, a Mixture of Sepiolite and Kieselguhr, Safe and Effective for Terrestrial Animals?

ECHEMI 2023-12-26

According to the recent announcement from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on December 21, 2023, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP Panel) has conducted an evaluation on the safety and efficacy of Anpro, a feed additive composed of Sepiolite and Kieselguhr (diatomaceous earth), for all terrestrial animal species, as requested by the European Commission.

After careful assessment, the expert panel was unable to draw conclusions regarding the safety of the additive for the target species, consumers, and users due to insufficient data. However, it was determined that the additive poses no safety concerns for the environment. Additionally, the panel could not reach a conclusion regarding the efficacy of the additive for all terrestrial animal species.

Based on the available information, there is no indication of significant absorption of the additive components, suggesting no substantial concern for consumers. However, the additive does present a risk if inhaled. While it is not irritating to the skin or eyes, it should be considered a potential sensitizer for the skin.

One notable limitation of the assessment was the absence of suitable data on nanoparticles, as required by the Guidance on risk assessment of nanomaterials. Consequently, potential risks associated with the presence of nanoparticles in Anpro could not be evaluated for the target species, consumers, and users.

Considering the findings, the question arises: Is Anpro, a mixture of Sepiolite and Kieselguhr, safe and effective for terrestrial animals? The EFSA's scientific opinion suggests that due to a lack of adequate data, the safety of Anpro as a feed additive for the target species cannot be established. However, the additive is deemed safe for the environment. Furthermore, the efficacy of Anpro for all terrestrial animal species remains inconclusive. These findings highlight the importance of further research and data collection to ensure the safety and effectiveness of additives in animal feed, ensuring the well-being of animals and the integrity of the food chain.
