Is Anpro, a Mixture of Sepiolite and Kieselguhr, Safe and Effective for Terrestrial Animals?

According to the recent announcement from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on December 21, 2023, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP Panel) has conducted an evaluation on the safety and efficacy of Anpro, a feed additive composed of Sepiolite and Kieselguhr (diatomaceous earth), for all terrestrial animal species, as requested by the European Commission.

After careful assessment, the expert panel was unable to draw conclusions regarding the safety of the additive for the target species, consumers, and users due to insufficient data. Consequently, potential risks associated with the presence of nanoparticles in Anpro could not be evaluated for the target species, consumers, and users.

The EFSA's scientific opinion suggests that due to a lack of adequate data, the safety of Anpro as a feed additive for the target species cannot be established.
