What Material is ABS: Definitions, Characteristics and Applications

What material is ABS? ABS material is the abbreviation for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer board; it is a type of polymer artificial board.

 

Thermoplastic plastics like ABS do not burn but instead liquefy, making them easy to injection mold and then recycle. In contrast, thermosetting plastics can only be heated once (typically during the injection molding process). The first heating causes the thermosetting material to solidify (similar to two-part epoxy resin), resulting in irreversible chemical changes. If you attempt to heat thermosetting plastic to a high temperature again, it will only burn. This property makes thermosetting materials poor candidates for recycling.

 

What material is ABS? Thermoplastics like ABS consist of three monomer units:

 

•Acrylonitrile: a synthetic monomer made from ammonia and propylene.

•Butadiene: Monomer produced as a by-product with ethylene from steam cracker production.

•Styrene: Monomer produced from the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene.

 

Material characteristics of ABS:

1. Due to its hardness, ABS has good impacting strength and scratch resistance while having excellent dimensional stability among others. It is also known for its water-resistant characteristics, and corrosion-resistant features, which makes it a perfect choice in the sheet market.

2.  Plus, the ABS material is translucent.  Although it is just as malleable as acrylic and see-through, it is far more affordable.  Furthermore, ABS comes in three color options (beige, black, and clear) in quantity.

3.  ABS is very easy to machine, cut, drill, and manufacture which means this material has become a favorite because it offers the ability to create complex shapes and features in prototypes or part production.

4. ABS material is susceptible to deformation and may even melt in high-temperature environments, usually between 60°C and 80°C. However, it performs well at low temperatures and is able to function properly in extremely cold environments up to -40°C. It is important to note that ABS materials can be flammable under certain circumstances.

 

The most common method of making ABS is through an emulsion process and is used globally. Another thing about ABS is that it is a thermoplastic substance, meaning it can be recycled, we have mentioned it earlier. This means one way to produce ABS plastic is the use of other ABS plastic (making ABS out of ABS in short). ABS is simple to mold and its low melting point makes it ideal for injection molding production methods or 3D printing using FDM printers.

 

ABS is also budget-friendly (priced about $1.50 per pound, usually somewhere between “polypropylene” and “polycarbonate”): ABS’s low glassing temperature limits its use in high-temperature applications. The combination of these qualities has made ABS popular in different industries for many purposes.

 

What are some applications of ABS?

Automotive Industry: ABS is used in many automotive components such as dashboards, exterior panels, steering wheels, soundproofing panels, door locks, bumpers, and ventilation ducts. ABS is also used extensively in the decoration of car interiors. It is a versatile material that offers strength and durability.

 

Office Machines: Office equipment and machines often require a sleek appearance and a good tactile feel. ABS is commonly used in the production of parts for telephones, storage devices, computers, fax machines, and copiers due to its high gloss and ease of molding.

 

Household Appliances: ABS plastic is widely used in household appliances and small appliances, including washing machines, televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, and kitchen appliances. It is also used in the construction industry for pipes, sanitary ware, and decorative panels.

 

Coating Processes: Plastics have gained widespread use in industrial products. Plastics are lightweight, have excellent corrosion resistance, poor thermal conductivity, and can be easily molded into complex shapes. In order to eliminate press marks and uneven color on the plastic surface, it is often necessary to coat the plastic surface. Painting can improve the appearance and extend the service life of plastic products."

What material is ABS? As compared to other thermoplastics ABS plastic is less dangerous because of its less toxicity than any other product. While ABS plastic is safe when exposed in small amounts (in terms of quantity), there have been no known negative health effects associated with contact or ingestion at this point. There’s nothing in it known to be carcinogenic; it doesn’t leach into the soil or water supply; it doesn’t degrade over time. And because it’s food-safe (and other qualities), it can also be used in making kids’ toys and so on.

 

Although this problem can be resolved with ABS by modifying its molecular structure, there remain nonetheless other limitations: ABS cannot be used as a medical implant.

 

Once more, ABS plastic is 100% recyclable and biocompatible as well. That’s why it mixes well with other materials resulting in the production of quality yet affordable items.
