Will Biotech IPOs Regain Momentum in 2024?

ECHEMI 2024-01-12

The annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference is in full swing, and amidst the bustling atmosphere, a flurry of M&A announcements has been making headlines. This suggests an exciting start for an anticipated innovative market, similar to last year. However, despite these positive signs, the capital market tells a different story.

IPOs: A Lengthy Path Ahead?
According to data from BioPharma Dive, there were only 19 Biotech IPOs in 2023, a slight decline compared to 2022 and significantly lower than the 104 IPOs in 2021. It appears that the question is no longer when the IPO market for Biotech will rebound but whether the demands on young pharmaceutical companies have increased.

A Shift in Requirements:
In the years 2020 and 2021, nearly two-thirds of the Biotech companies that went public had drugs in pre-clinical or Phase I clinical stages. In contrast, in 2023, only 8 IPO companies were in the early stages of research. About one-third of the listed pharmaceutical companies had reached Phase III clinical trials, the highest proportion in the past six years. Although the sample size is small, the data from 2023 suggests that the IPO path for young Biotech companies may become more protracted. This compels startups to rely more on existing supporters such as venture capital firms rather than accessing funds through the public market.

Maintaining Stock Prices and Market Value:
Investors and analysts are also keeping a close eye on whether newly listed Biotech companies can sustain their stock prices and market value. While about half of the IPOs in 2023 achieved this, including notable companies like RayzeBio, a developer of radiopharmaceuticals, and Structure Therapeutics, focused on obesity treatments, many Biotech transactions resulted in prices significantly lower than their IPO prices.

The Biotech industry is hoping for a brighter future, but there are challenges to overcome. The road to IPOs may be longer, and companies must be resilient and explore multiple sources of funding. While the market shows potential, cautious optimism is necessary to navigate the complex landscape and find sustainable paths for Biotech companies.
