The collaboration between Kanghua Biotech and HilleVax is based on the immense market potential of the norovirus vaccine. Norovirus, a highly contagious pathogen transmitted primarily through fecal-oral routes, causes widespread outbreaks during the winter and spring seasons. Infections are particularly prevalent in crowded places like schools and childcare centers, posing a significant risk to the elderly, children, and immunocompromised individuals. With no approved specific treatment or preventive vaccine available globally, the demand for a norovirus vaccine remains unmet.
Frost & Sullivan estimates that China will approve the norovirus vaccine by 2026, with the market size projected to grow from 1.53 billion RMB in 2026 to 22.93 billion RMB in 2031, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate of 71.85%. Kanghua Biotech's recombinant hexavalent norovirus vaccine, HIL-216, stands out as the most advanced multivalent vaccine in development. It covers the six major genotypes (GI.1, GII.2, GII.3, GII.4, GII.6, and GII.17) and theoretically provides protection against over 90% of norovirus infections and associated acute gastroenteritis.
Competing for the Lead: A Race in a Blue Ocean Market
The vast market potential of the norovirus vaccine has attracted several players globally, although no products have been approved for market release yet. Internationally, there are ongoing clinical studies for various candidates, including Vaxart's recombinant adenovirus vector oral vaccine, Icon Genetics Gmb's bivalent VLP vaccine, Moderna's trivalent mRNA-1403, and pentavalent mRNA-1405, currently in Phase I or II clinical trials.
On the domestic front, China has also made significant progress. The most advanced candidate, a recombinant bivalent norovirus vaccine (GI.1, GII.4) developed jointly by China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) and Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products, entered Phase III clinical trials in May 2023. Preliminary results from Phase I and II trials have demonstrated its safety and immunogenicity.
Furthermore, Anhui Zhifei Longcom, a subsidiary of ChongqingZhifei Biological Products, is conducting Phase II clinical trials for a tetravalent recombinant VLP vaccine (Pichia pastoris). Yuan Da Sai Wei Xin's tetravalent recombinant norovirus vaccine (Pichia pastoris) has obtained clinical trial approval. Kang Le Wei Shi, known for its nonavalent HPV vaccine, has also ventured into the development of a recombinant multivalent norovirus vaccine.
