CJ Biomaterials' Patented PHA Technology Will Be Used for Noodle Cup Coating

ECHEMI 2024-02-04

CJ Biomaterials has announced that its patented PHA technology is being used to produce new noodle cups. It is sold at CU, a Korean convenience store chain. CJ Biomaterials is a division of CJ CheilJedang, South Korea. It is a major producer of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers.

The new eco-friendly noodle cup is the first of its kind in Korea. Thanks to PHA technology incorporated into the inner coating of the cup, the cup has become biodegradable and compostable, which reduces the amount of plastic waste entering the environment.

In 2023, CJ Biomaterials developed microwaveable paper coating technology. It combines its patented PHA with PLA. Paper coating solutions have increased biobased content. This reduces the use of petroleum-based plastics. Does not affect the function and quality of paper cups. Through the partnership, the coating technology will be used in New Today's Chicken Noodle cup packaging.

"Using PHA with PLA improves the processing properties of PLA. It does this by providing flexibility and allowing for more stable use over a wider temperature range. It also has good oil barrier properties. This goes beyond traditional polypropylene coatings while providing a 100% bio-based solution," said Max Senechal, chief commercial officer at CJ Biomaterials.

"We are contributing to the creation of environmentally friendly packaging. We are also demonstrating the practicality and affordability of sustainable alternatives. This marks an important step towards reducing plastic waste. It will promote a greener, more environmentally friendly future. " Senechal added.

CJ Biomaterials' PHA biopolymers are sourced from nature and sustainably produced. They can be used as building blocks. It will replace and improve the functional properties of many polymers. This will aid in the production of finished products or serve as a starting point for sustainable chemistry.

PHAs work well as modifiers for other polymers or biopolymers. It increases biobased content and accelerates biodegradation. It can also improve the functional properties of resins and finished products. CJ Biomaterials is one of the few companies capable of large-scale production of PHA. CJ Biomaterials is committed to taking impactful action and delivering environmentally friendly solutions leveraging its broad PHA technology platform.

CJ Biomaterials continues to expand applications for its PHA technology. It develops solutions for food and beverage packaging, fibers and nonwovens. It also creates consumer goods, agriculture and horticulture, and 3D printing filament solutions.
