Sumitomo Chemical Launches Pilot Plant for Ethanol-to-Propylene Process

Sumitomo Chemical has completed and launched a pilot facility at its Chiba Works (Sodegaura site) to demonstrate its newly developed process of producing propylene directly from ethanol. Supported by Japan’s NEDO Green Innovation Fund, this technology could mark a major breakthrough in replacing fossil-based feedstocks.

Unlike conventional methods that pass through ethylene as an intermediate, Sumitomo’s process produces propylene in a single step, potentially lowering costs while also yielding hydrogen as a valuable byproduct. When bio-ethanol is used, the process can simultaneously generate bio-based hydrogen, offering additional environmental benefits.

The company aims for commercialization by the early 2030s and plans to license the technology globally. This initiative aligns with Sumitomo’s broader green transformation strategy, including expanding catalyst sales and resource-circular business models. By targeting bio-based propylene and hydrogen, Sumitomo seeks to position itself as a leader in low-carbon petrochemicals.
