VASEP Forecasts Vietnam's Shrimp Exports to Reach $4 Billion This Year
VASEP Forecasts Vietnam's Shrimp Exports to Reach $4 Billion This Year This optimistic forecast comes as inflationary pressures ease and importers reduce their stockpiles, leading to a projected recovery in demand starting from the second half of this year. VASEP believes that this recovery will create an opportunity for shrimp prices to rise again.
Advantages of Vietnam's Shrimp Exports:
Compared to its competitors, Vietnam enjoys several advantages in shrimp exports. Its favorable geographical location and lower logistics costs make it an attractive option for buyers, especially given the recent increase in transportation costs caused by the crisis in the Red Sea. As a result, Ecuador's shrimp exports to China are expected to decrease, presenting an opportunity for Vietnam to enter the Chinese market. Despite facing price competitiveness challenges due to the influx of low-priced shrimp from other countries, VASEP believes that Vietnamese shrimp still holds an advantage in the high-end market in China.
Export Trends:
In 2023, Vietnam's shrimp exports to mainland China and Hong Kong amounted to $607 million, experiencing an 8% decrease compared to the previous year. This decline was attributed to the influx of low-priced shrimp from other countries, which posed a challenge to the price competitiveness of Vietnamese shrimp. However, VASEP remains optimistic about the prospects of Vietnamese shrimp in the Chinese market.
Regarding the European Union (EU) market, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine led consumers to reduce their consumption costs, while product prices and transportation costs continued to rise. In 2023, Vietnam's shrimp exports to the EU amounted to $421 million, representing a significant decrease of 39% compared to the previous year.
Vietnam's shrimp exports to the United States amounted to $682 million in 2023, experiencing a 15% decrease compared to the previous year. However, VASEP predicts a slight growth in Vietnamese shrimp sales in the United States in 2024, driven by improvements in food consumption, easing inflation, and the recovery of retail sales.
VASEP also highlights the potential of the Japanese market, projecting an earlier recovery in Vietnam's shrimp exports to Japan compared to other major markets such as the United States and the EU.
Recommendations:
VASEP suggests that the key to expanding Vietnam's shrimp exports lies in seeking potential partnerships, expanding market reach, investing in technological innovation and equipment, and enhancing the competitiveness of product quality. By capitalizing on its advantages and addressing market challenges, Vietnam can further strengthen its position as a significant player in the global shrimp export industry.
With VASEP's optimistic forecast of Vietnam's shrimp exports reaching $4 billion this year, the country's shrimp industry is poised for growth. Despite facing challenges in certain markets, Vietnam's favorable geographical location, competitive logistics costs, and high-quality shrimp products give it an edge in the global market. By leveraging these advantages and implementing strategic measures, Vietnam can continue to thrive as a leading exporter of shrimp.
