First, when solute particles come in contact with those solvents particles, this solute with high solubility will have strong interactions with the solvent particles, and individual solute particles start to break apart from each other. During this, the large crystals of the solute are broken down into smaller ones. And smaller ones into further smaller parts. Finally, the solvent molecules completely take place and surround the solute to dissolve them in the solution.
The Dissolving Process:
The interaction we just stated above appears between the molecules depending on the type of solvents and solutes. In the case of nonpolar solutes, the solute must be nonpolar as well and in the case of water solutions (water being polar itself), the solutes should be also polar.
The polar nature comes from the presence of a polar molecule in solute which must have higher concentrations of positive or negative electric charge to give it a polarity. Next, the lattice energy also plays an important role when it comes to solubility. Solubility reduces as lattice energy increases in a molecule. Moreover, a chemical is extremely soluble in water if its hydration enthalpy is greater.
NaCl Polar or NonPolar?
The subject matter salt, NaCl is also a typical ionic compound and is highly polar and readily dissolves in water. NaCl is polar due to the very significant difference in electronegativity of sodium and chloride ions, the only components in this salt molecule. Both are one in number in their molecule and this overall structure with different electronegativities gives them a strong polar nature. So, the answer to the question “is NaCl soluble in water” can be simply given as, yes, it is soluble in water as solvent and solute both are nonpolar.
NaCl Solubility
NaCl is rather a very good solute. This I due to the presence of strong polar ends in its molecule due to electromagnetivity difference. These polar ends are highly “submissive” to interact with water molecules. Like every other polar and ionic salt, this one is also soluble in polar solvents and does not show solubility in nonpolar solvents like C6H6, CCl4, etc. As mentioned before, NaCl is ionic and strong ability to interact with water but this ability is also influenced by the high charge-to-radius ratio present in NaCl.
Let us compare this ratio of NaCl to AgCl in which Ag has a higher ionic radius as compared to Na. But this feature makes it less soluble in water as compared to NaCl which has a small radius. The smaller size enables these molecules to be pulled in strongly due to the presence of strong electrostatic interaction from water molecules thus resulting in more solubility for NaCl. It should be noted that even though it has higher solubility in polar solvents like water, it still is not soluble in nonpolar solvents.
NaCl and Non-Polar Solvents:
As stated before, it shows solubility in polar solutions but is a poor soluble substance when it comes to nonpolar solvents. This is because “like dissolves like”. The highly polar NaCl doesn’t find any electrostatic energy to attach with its polar ends of molecules.
For example, CCl4 which is a common nonpolar solvent has a covalent bonding in its symmetrical molecular structure which is not polar (The C-Cl bond is polar though). If they are allowed to react, the salt doesn’t find any “pull” from the CCL4 molecules and hence the dielectric constant of water remains constant resulting in no solubility.
