Evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of Fumonisin Esterase Produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCAIM (P) Y001485 as a Feed Additive for All Pig Species: Insights from EU Assessment
In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducted an assessment of fumonisin esterase, produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCAIM (P) Y001485, as a feed additive for all pig species. The evaluation aimed to determine the safety and effectiveness of this enzyme in reducing mycotoxin contamination in pig feed. Assessment of Safety and Efficacy:
Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA's Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) reviewed the safety and efficacy of fumonisin esterase as a technological feed additive. The assessment focused on its use in piglets, pigs for fattening, sows, and minor growing and reproductive porcine species.
The expert panel concluded that the additive is safe for weaned and suckling piglets, as well as pigs for fattening. The recommended dosage of the additive in complete feed for all minor growing porcine species should not exceed 60 U/kg. However, no definitive conclusions could be drawn regarding the safety of the additive in sows.
The evaluation also indicated that the use of fumonisin esterase as a feed additive at the minimum recommended concentration of 60 U/kg effectively reduces fumonisin contamination in feed. This conclusion can be extended to all growing and reproductive pigs, as well as other minor porcine species.
Consumer Safety and Environmental Considerations:
The EFSA assessment emphasized that the use of the additive in animal nutrition does not pose any concerns for consumer safety. It was determined that the additive is dust-free and unlikely to cause respiratory sensitization or irritation. Furthermore, the additive was found to be non-irritating to the eyes and skin, although further investigation is required regarding skin sensitization. The evaluation also concluded that the use of the additive as a feed additive is considered safe for the environment.
