BASF and Worldlight launch new polyurethane photovoltaic module frame
At CHINAPLAS 2024, BASF will work with Jiangsu Worldlight New Material Co., Ltd, a global photovoltaic composite frame manufacturer, to create an overall photovoltaic frame solution. The PV frame is manufactured using an industry-leading total solution that combines polyurethane (PU) composites with a water-based coating solution, resulting in an 85% reduction in product carbon footprint (PCF) compared to aluminum frames. The water-based coating solution further reduces volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by more than 90%.
The production of PU composites is more energy efficient than aluminum. When combined with a water-based solution, the entire solution is also lighter in weight and provides excellent insulation.
"Worldlight has built three main applications for different scenarios: offshore photovoltaic modules, large-scale land-based photovoltaic modules, and industrial and commercial rooftop photovoltaic modules. BASF's total solutions enable us to meet strict standards and overcome challenges from different environmental conditions and design specifications." said Worldlight CEO Liang Zhao.
PU composites are made of glass fiber-reinforced polyurethanes and have been widely used in the automotive, bridge construction and aerospace industries. Coated PU composites offer excellent cost performance and mechanical properties compared to aluminum, including resistance to wear, acids, alkalis and UV radiation.
