Israel Releases Comprehensive Guide to Phosphatidylserine, a New Food Ingredient Derived from Soybeans
Israel's Ministry of Health recently published a groundbreaking guide on the utilization of phosphatidylserine, a novel food ingredient derived from soybeans. This comprehensive guide provides essential information and regulations governing the production, composition, and permissible usage of phosphatidylserine in various food categories. Let's delve into the key details outlined in the guide.
On April 2, 2024, the Ministry of Health of Israel introduced the "Phosphatidylserine New Food Ingredient Guide," which emphasizes the implementation of stringent standards and requirements for the production and application of phosphatidylserine from soybeans.
1. Production Standards and Hygiene Requirements:
The guide highlights the necessity for producers to adhere to good manufacturing practices and meet stringent hygiene standards during the production of phosphatidylserine. These measures aim to ensure the safety and quality of the ingredient from a manufacturing perspective.
2. Composition Requirements:
The guide outlines specific compositional requirements for phosphatidylserine. These include limitations on the content of glycerides (≤2%), tocopherol (≤0.2%), plant sterols (≤0.028%), peroxide value (≤0.5 meq/Kg), total arsenic (≤0.5 mg/kg), lead (≤0.5 mg/kg), cadmium (≤0.2 mg/kg), and other relevant parameters. These requirements are crucial to ensure the purity and safety of phosphatidylserine in food applications.
3. Usage Restrictions:
Phosphatidylserine is prohibited for use in infant and toddler food or special dietary products. However, it is permitted for application in certain food categories, subject to specific limitations. The maximum allowable concentrations of phosphatidylserine in various food products are provided in the table below. It is mandatory for the ingredient name "soybean phosphatidylserine" to be clearly labeled in the ingredient list.
| Food Category | Maximum Limit (mg/100ml) |
| Milk and Milk Substitutes | 20 |
| Flavored or Fermented Dairy Drinks | 41 |
| Yogurt and Yogurt-based Beverages | 40 |
Israel's release of the phosphatidylserine new food ingredient guide signifies a significant step in regulating the utilization of this soybean-derived ingredient. The guide ensures that producers adhere to strict hygiene standards during production, and it outlines compositional requirements and usage restrictions for phosphatidylserine in different food categories. By providing comprehensive guidelines, Israel aims to promote the safe and responsible integration of phosphatidylserine into the food industry.
