Breakthrough Collaboration: Ipsen and Skyhawk Therapeutics Join Forces in RNA-Targeted Small Molecule Drug Development
In a groundbreaking partnership, Ipsen and Skyhawk Therapeutics have recently announced a global exclusive collaboration agreement to jointly develop novel small molecule drugs targeting rare neurological disorders at the RNA level. With a staggering investment of $1.8 billion from Ipsen, this collaboration holds immense promise for advancing the treatment landscape for these challenging diseases.
Ipsen, a renowned pharmaceutical company, and Skyhawk Therapeutics, a pioneering biotechnology firm, have joined hands to explore the potential of RNA expression modulation in rare neurological disorders. While financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, Ipsen's substantial investment will encompass upfront payments, development costs, regulatory expenses, and commercial milestone payments. Additionally, Skyhawk will be entitled to receive tiered royalties on collaborative products.
Under the agreement, Ipsen will hold exclusive global rights and assume responsibility for all research activities related to these investigational molecules. Steve Glyman, Head of Neuroscience Research at Ipsen, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize the treatment of rare neurological disorders by modulating RNA expression.
Central to this collaboration is Skyhawk's proprietary platform, which integrates four complementary datasets to discover and design small molecule drugs targeting RNA molecules upstream of disease-causing proteins. The platform's first component, SKYSTAR, combines structural, bioinformatics, and computational biology information to identify high-value RNA targets from public and proprietary data. Subsequently, SKYSEQ, a multiplex screening system, assesses selected targets and searches the SKYLIBRARY repository for RNA-targeted compounds with therapeutic potential. Skyhawk's platform also leverages its proprietary machine learning tool, SKYAI, to integrate information from SKYSTAR, along with toxicology, animal studies, and chemical data, to drive the development of next-generation RNA splicing modulators.
While specific disease targets have not been disclosed by Ipsen and Skyhawk Therapeutics, Sergey Paushkin, CSO of Skyhawk, mentioned their focus on researching rare neurological disorders. Skyhawk's developmental pipeline currently lacks approved therapeutic drugs, with its most advanced programs undergoing Phase I clinical trials.
This collaboration comes on the heels of Ipsen's recently signed $900 million contract with Sutro Biopharma, granting exclusive global rights to Sutro's investigational ADC (Antibody-Drug Conjugate) STRO-003, targeting the ROR1 tumor antigen in preclinical stages. By expanding its portfolio, Ipsen has ventured into both the ADC and RNA-targeted small molecule drug fields.
The partnership between Ipsen and Skyhawk Therapeutics represents a significant breakthrough in the development of RNA-targeted small molecule drugs for rare neurological disorders. With Ipsen's substantial investment and Skyhawk's innovative platform, this collaboration holds tremendous potential to advance the understanding and treatment of these challenging diseases, ultimately improving the lives of patients worldwide.
