Breaking the Market: The Phenomenal Demand for a 10,000 RMB Cholesterol-Lowering Injection in China
In recent times, the Chinese pharmaceutical market has witnessed a remarkable surge in the popularity of a cholesterol-lowering drug priced at 10,000 RMB per injection. Despite concerns about affordability, this medication has managed to capture the attention of consumers and defy market expectations.
China's pharmaceutical landscape has long been criticized for its limited payment capabilities, both in terms of insufficient coverage provided by health insurance and individuals' out-of-pocket expenses. However, certain expensive medications, including those not covered by insurance, have demonstrated substantial sales performance within the country. A notable example is Leqvio, a long-acting cholesterol-lowering drug developed by Novartis.
Leqvio is priced at 9,988 RMB per injection in China, with patients requiring three injections in the first year and two injections annually thereafter. Despite the significant cost of treatment, Leqvio has garnered strong demand. According to Novartis' first-quarter earnings call, the drug is attracting over 250 new patients daily, surpassing the company's initial expectations. If this sales trend continues, Leqvio's revenue in China could approach 3 billion RMB, reshaping market perceptions.
The success of Leqvio can be attributed to its unique mechanism of action as a gene therapy targeting proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). PCSK9 plays a crucial role in maintaining cholesterol homeostasis by regulating the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), commonly known as "bad cholesterol." Leqvio inhibits the production of PCSK9, leading to sustained and effective cholesterol reduction. Clinical trials have demonstrated the drug's remarkable ability to further lower LDL-C levels in patients already receiving statin therapy or those who are intolerant to or unable to reach target LDL-C levels with statins alone.
Prior to Leqvio's entry into the market, statins dominated the cholesterol-lowering field. While statins have been effective for many patients, their limitations and the need for alternative treatments were evident. Leqvio represents a significant breakthrough in this regard, providing a novel approach to achieving long-lasting and safe cholesterol reduction. Its approval in China includes its use as an adjunct therapy for adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial and non-familial) or mixed dyslipidemia. This includes patients who have not achieved their LDL-C targets despite receiving maximum tolerated statin therapy, those using statins in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies, and individuals who are intolerant to or contraindicated for statin therapy.
The remarkable success of the 10,000 RMB cholesterol-lowering injection in the Chinese market challenges preconceived notions about affordability and market dynamics. Leqvio, with its innovative gene therapy approach targeting PCSK9, has captured the attention of patients and healthcare professionals alike. By offering a viable solution for individuals who have not achieved optimal cholesterol levels using conventional therapies, Leqvio has paved the way for advancements in the field of cholesterol management. As the demand for this medication continues to surge, it exemplifies the evolving landscape of the Chinese pharmaceutical market and the potential for breakthrough therapies to reshape industry perceptions.
