Intensifying Competition: Price Reductions for Weight Loss Drugs Hit Novo Nordisk

ECHEMI 2024-05-07

The weight loss drug market is witnessing intensified competition as pharmaceutical companies strive to gain an edge in this lucrative sector. Recently, Novo Nordisk, a prominent player in the industry, found itself under pressure to reduce prices. Despite a remarkable 106% surge in sales, with their weight loss drug Wegovy generating $1.35 billion in the first quarter of 2024, Novo Nordisk fell short of analysts' expectations.

Novo Nordisk's Q1 financial report revealed a total revenue of DKK 65.349 billion ($9.49 billion), indicating a 24% year-on-year growth driven by their anti-diabetic and weight loss medications. The sales of Ozempic, their glucose-lowering drug, reached DKK 27.81 billion ($4.04 billion), reflecting a significant 40.41% increase compared to the previous year. Wegovy, their weight loss drug, experienced a doubling of sales, soaring to DKK 9.377 billion ($1.36 billion), a remarkable 106% increase. Additionally, their oral medication Rybelsus generated sales of DKK 5.013 billion ($0.73 billion). Novo Nordisk continues to dominate the global GLP-1 diabetes market with a market share of 55.3%, and they hold an 85.4% market share in the weight loss segment. However, maintaining a sustained competitive advantage in the business realm is a daunting task.

In November 2023, Eli Lilly's tirzpatide, a weight loss drug, received approval and was officially launched in pharmacies the following month. To quickly penetrate the market, Zepbound, Eli Lilly's product, was priced 20% lower than Novo Nordisk's counterparts. Within a little over a month, Zepbound generated revenue of $176 million. In the recent Q1 report, Zepbound continued to impress, surpassing market expectations with sales of $517 million. This remarkable performance highlights the immense potential of weight loss medications. Additionally, Mounjaro, Eli Lilly's glucose-lowering medication, achieved sales of $1.807 billion, a staggering 217% increase compared to the previous year. The combined sales of Zepbound and Mounjaro amounted to $2.324 billion, further solidifying the anticipation of reaching billions of dollars in annual revenue. Responding to such strong competition, Novo Nordisk's Wegovy sales for Q1 almost doubled but fell short of analysts' expectations of $1.5 billion. To maintain their appeal to patients, Novo Nordisk is compelled to respond with price reductions.

In the domestic market, Novo Nordisk's anti-diabetic medication, semaglutide, also experienced a price reduction. Currently, the prices of the 1.5ml and 3ml semaglutide pens in public hospitals are RMB 421.34 and RMB 716.28, respectively. Novo Nordisk is not surprised by the pressure exerted by the exceptional performance of Eli Lilly's products. The company stated, "We have been saying for a long time that with market maturity, increased trading volume, and competition entering the market, prices will naturally decline. This is what we have seen in the first quarter and what we expect for the entire year." To maintain its leading position, Novo Nordisk aims to expand the indications of semaglutide, such as cardiovascular disease and NASH, while also developing more effective medications.

The weight loss drug market is witnessing a surge in competition, prompting Novo Nordisk to respond with price reductions. Despite a significant increase in sales, Novo Nordisk fell short of analysts' expectations, primarily due to the strong competition from Eli Lilly's Zepbound. Novo Nordisk's strategy includes expanding the indications of their medications and developing more effective drugs. The evolving landscape of the weight loss drug market demands continuous innovation and adaptation from pharmaceutical companies as they strive to maintain their market positions.
