Mussels Recall Due to Algal Toxin Contamination in Australia and New Zealand
On May 17, 2024, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued a recall notice for a batch of live mussels produced by Flinders Mussels. The recall was initiated due to the detection of biotoxins (domoic acid) produced by the toxic algae species Pseudo-nitzschia.
According to the recall notice, the affected mussels were sold at retail outlets in the state of Victoria, including Carrum Big Fish and Flinders Mussels markets. FSANZ has advised consumers not to consume the recalled products and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Domoic acid is a potent neurotoxin produced by certain species of marine algae, known as diatoms. Consumption of shellfish contaminated with this toxin can lead to a condition called Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), which can cause gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, and in severe cases, short-term memory loss and even death.
The recall highlights the importance of effective monitoring and management of harmful algal blooms to ensure the safety of seafood products. Regulatory authorities and producers must work diligently to identify and mitigate risks associated with marine biotoxins, protecting public health and maintaining consumer confidence in the seafood industry.
Consumers are advised to stay informed about food safety alerts and to only purchase seafood from reputable sources that comply with strict quality and safety standards. By working together, industry and consumers can help prevent incidents of foodborne illnesses and support the sustainable production of safe and wholesome seafood.
