New Alzheimer's Drug Leeyebao to Launch in China
As China's population is rapidly aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD) has gradually emerged as a major public health challenge facing the country. According to statistics, China has now become the country with the largest number of AD patients globally, with the total number of patients approaching 10 million. Looking ahead, this figure is still expected to continue rising, undoubtedly placing a heavy burden and pressure on the vast number of patients, their families, and the entire society.
However, it is gratifying to note that a groundbreaking new AD treatment drug is about to be launched in the domestic market. According to data from the Yaorongcloud platform, in January 2024, the China National Medical Products Administration officially approved the marketing of the category 1 new drug for Alzheimer's disease - Lencaneikumab Injection (trade name: Leeyebao) developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. This drug aims to provide an effective treatment option for patients with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia.
This new drug is a humanized monoclonal antibody, and its core mechanism of action is to effectively reduce the level of amyloid-beta (Aβ) in the patient's brain, thereby preventing the further development of the AD disease. Clinical trial results have shown that compared to patients receiving placebo treatment, those treated with Leeyebao exhibited significant improvements in cognitive function.
Furthermore, the pricing strategy of Leeyebao also reflects its affordability. According to information released by Takeda China, the drug is priced at 2,508 yuan per bottle (specification: 200 mg/bottle) in the domestic market, which is comparable to the prices in developed countries such as the United States and Japan. For a patient weighing about 60 kg, the cost of a single dose is approximately 7,500 yuan, and the annual treatment cost is roughly 180,000 yuan.
In the future, the launch of Leeyebao is expected to significantly improve the treatment situation for China's AD patients. Industry experts generally believe that this new drug not only provides an effective means to delay the deterioration of the condition for mild AD patients, but also brings new hope for treatment to those with moderate to severe conditions. As more innovative AD treatment drugs enter the market, the diagnostic and treatment level for China's AD patients is expected to be further improved, providing them with higher-quality medical services.
