Precision agriculture is driving significant growth in the South African UAV market, which will reach $138 million by 2025

In recent years, the South African agricultural sector has increasingly adopted UAV technology for precision farming. UAV experts at ITOO Special Risks say precision farming can help farmers take the right action at the right time and place to improve profit margins, sustainability and productivity while saving time.

UAVs are used in a wide range of applications in South African agriculture, including soil sampling, field analysis, seeding and precision pesticide spraying. Compared to traditional planes and helicopters, UAV are able to spray pesticides more accurately, covering nearly 100 percent of farmland. UAV technology not only improves the efficiency of agricultural production, but also promotes more environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices, enabling farmers to use water more efficiently, reduce waste, and combat the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture.

According to market research firm Industry ARC, the small drone market in South Africa is growing rapidly. The market is expected to reach R2.5 billion ($138 million) by 2025, with an average annual growth rate of 22.35% between 2020 and 2025. South Africa is currently the country with the highest use of UAV technology on the continent.

 In South Africa, the mining industry is the largest user of UAV technology, followed by the film entertainment industry and agriculture. Major retailer Woolworths says its suppliers are increasing their use of UAV technology to promote renewable agriculture and sustainable management of water resources. With advanced sensors, farmers can monitor crop health in real time, enabling precision irrigation and resource optimization. 

With the continuous application of UAV technology in South African agriculture, it is expected to bring new opportunities and challenges for the future development of agriculture in the country.
