Kazakhstan Imposes Temporary Ban on Sugar Exports

ECHEMI 2024-07-10

On June 11, 2023, the Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan signed an important decree addressing issues related to sugar exports. According to this decree, Kazakhstan will implement a temporary ban on the export of domestic sugar to foreign countries, including exports to members of the Eurasian Economic Union, until August 31, 2024. However, this ban does not apply to the international transit of sugar or to sugar exports between other Eurasian Economic Union member states. The decree will officially take effect on June 14, 2024, bringing new changes to Kazakhstan's sugar export policy.

The implementation of this ban is aimed at protecting the domestic sugar market in Kazakhstan, preventing domestic sugar shortages and excessive price fluctuations. It also ensures the healthy and stable development of Kazakhstan's sugar industry. During the ban period, the Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan will closely monitor the dynamics of domestic and international sugar markets and adjust the sugar export policy accordingly.

It is worth noting that while the ban restricts sugar exports to Eurasian Economic Union member states, it does not affect the international transit of sugar. This means that Kazakhstan remains willing to facilitate international sugar trade and support the global circulation of sugar. Additionally, the ban does not apply to sugar exports between other Eurasian Economic Union member states, which helps maintain the stability of sugar trade within the union.

Overall, the implementation of this ban reflects the Kazakhstani government's emphasis on the domestic sugar market, as well as Kazakhstan's responsible attitude towards international sugar trade. During the ban period, the Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan will closely monitor the dynamics of domestic and international sugar markets, ensuring the stability of domestic sugar supply, and will adjust the sugar export policy as necessary to promote the sustainable development of Kazakhstan's sugar industry.
