Chile Revises Food Sanitation Regulations, Strengthening Requirements for Natural Syrups and Honey
On July 12, 2024, Chile's Ministry of Health issued an important announcement that it plans to overhaul the existing food hygiene regulations to strengthen the supervision of the quality of domestic food products, especially for natural syrups and honey products. This initiative reflects the Chilean government's strong commitment to public health and consumer rights, as well as the continued improvement of food industry standards.
One notable change in the revised regulations is the addition of the definition of natural palm syrup. This change means that palm syrup will be officially classified as a type of natural syrup, which will be subject to stricter regulations in production, distribution and regulation. This not only helps to ensure that consumers have access to all-natural, addition-free syrup products, but also helps to prevent counterfeit products that may appear on the market.
In addition, the amendment also proposes more stringent quality standards for honey products. According to the new regulations, key indicators such as the specific gravity of honey, water content, fructose and glucose content must meet specific standards. It is worth noting that the new regulations also specifically stipulate the upper limit of sucrose content in honey from different plants to prevent over-processing or adulteration. The implementation of these measures will effectively protect the purity and nutritional value of honey products, so that consumers can enjoy the natural taste at the same time, but also to ensure that their health rights and interests are not damaged.
This revised programme by the Chilean Ministry of Health provides an opportunity for the public to participate in the decision-making process. Until September 10, 2024, any citizen or interested party can submit their own comments and suggestions on the content of the amendments, with a view to making the new regulations more comprehensive, just and operational. This open and transparent decision-making method reflects the Chilean government's emphasis on public participation, and also helps the new regulations to gain broad social acceptance and support after implementation.
It is expected that the revised food hygiene regulations will be formally implemented in the near future after public consultation. This will have a profound impact on Chile's food industry, pushing producers to improve product quality and raise industry standards to meet the demand for high-quality, safe food in domestic and international markets. At the same time, consumers will also benefit from a safer and healthier food environment.
