AkzoNobel launches Securshield 500 for metal packaging industry
Food can manufacturers can now benefit from a new generation of metal packaging coatings developed by AkzoNobel that are free of bisphenol (BPXni*) and PVC.
Designed to help can manufacturers and their customers meet current and future regulatory requirements, the SecurshieldT 500 range of easy-open end coatings is more sustainable and offers significantly improved performance compared to today’s organosol alternatives.
The key benefit for coil coaters is that it can be seamlessly integrated into their existing manufacturing processes, enabling them to use a single technology to meet the varying needs of food can manufacturers. At the same time, can manufacturers are able to take advantage of the flexibility and working capital benefits of a single product for a wide range of metal food packaging.
“Securshield 500 is the latest example of how we work with manufacturers to develop meaningful solutions to real-world challenges,” explains Chris Bradford, Marketing Director for AkzoNobel’s Industrial Coatings business.
“We have already committed to not using bisphenols to protect metal packaging in the future. The new product range has been developed in response to changing legislation and the European food packaging industry’s desire to move to more sustainable alternatives.”
The launch of the Securshield 500 range follows AkzoNobel’s recent launch of Accelshield 700, a styrene- and BPXni-free inner coating for beverage cans, and Accelstyle 100 and 200 overprint varnishes for two-piece aluminium beverage cans, which are free of bisphenols, styrene and PFAS.
All of these new product launches present challenges for coil coating manufacturers, can manufacturers and their customers. The European Commission continues to phase out the use of bisphenols, while the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), NGOs and retailers are increasingly concerned about plastics used in food packaging.
Bradford continued: “Our growing portfolio of next-generation technologies will provide the metal can and beverage packaging industry with viable and safe alternatives for even the most challenging foods and liquids, complying with current and future FDA and EU regulations.
