EU to Revise Regulations on the Use of Triacylglycerol Lipase

ECHEMI 2024-07-26

On July 24, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) officially published the official document 2024.8944, which aims to comprehensively revise and adjust the regulations on the use of triacylglycerol lipase. This initiative not only reflects EFSA's continued concern and strict supervision in the field of food safety, but also indicates a new round of upgrades in the use of food additives.

The specific content of the revision is as follows, aiming to further refine and optimize the limits of use of triacylglycerol lipase in different foods:

1. In the flour field, no clear restrictions were originally set on the use of triacylglycerol lipase. However, with the implementation of the new regulations, the maximum usage has been precisely set at 0.2 mg/kg to ensure the safety and health of flour products.

2. For milk, an important food category, the new regulations also make adjustments. The original unlimited use has been adjusted to 0.14 mg/kg, a change designed to better protect the quality and safety of milk and its products.

3. In the case of cheese, butter and other dairy products, the previously broad range (187-311 mg/kg) was significantly tightened to 6.7 mg/kg. This revision not only helps to improve the overall quality of dairy products, but also reflects the deep concern for consumers' health.

4. The use of triacylglycerol lipase in edible vegetable oils has also ushered in a new adjustment. The upper limit of 12.5 mg/kg has been increased to 38.3 mg/kg, a change designed to better meet market demand while ensuring the safety and stability of vegetable oils.

5. In the field of edible oils and fats, the use of triacylglycerol lipase, which had not been set a clear limit, was specified as 39.8 mg/kg. The introduction of this regulation undoubtedly provides a strong support for the standardized development of the oil and grease industry.

It is worth noting that the document will enter into force on the date of its official publication in the Official Journal of the Government of the European Union. EFSA said that the revision aims to further regulate the application of triacylglycerol lipase in food through more stringent and scientific use regulations, so as to ensure food safety and consumer health rights are not infringed. This initiative will undoubtedly promote the food industry to a more safe, healthy and sustainable direction.
