Semaglutide, the 'Weight Loss Wonder Drug', Approved for New Indications

ECHEMI 2024-07-29

Novo Nordisk is proud to announce that its weight loss drug Wegovy has been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the prevention of stroke and heart disease. This important development marks an unprecedented opportunity for Wegovy to significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction and stroke in adults who have already been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease (CVD), are overweight or obese and do not have diabetes.

Behind this approval is the solid support of the five-year-long SELECT clinical trial. The study, which tracked the use of medication in 17,600 subjects, showed that Wegovy was able to significantly reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) by 20 percent compared to placebo. What is particularly exciting is that this remarkable effect spanned age, gender, race, ethnicity, BMI and kidney function to benefit a broad patient population.

It is important to note that prior to EMA approval, Wegovy was approved in the United Kingdom for the prevention of heart disease and stroke, especially in people with a BMI of 27 or greater who have already been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. This move further highlights Wegovy's outstanding performance in cardiovascular health and its broad application prospects.

With the continuous expansion of the indications of Wegovy, from the initial function of hypoglycemia and weight loss to the current cardiovascular protection and heart failure treatment, its potential of "almighty god medicine" is gradually emerging. Novo Nordisk is actively working to make Wegovy a revolutionary medicine that can improve human health across the board. We have reason to believe that Wegovy will be approved in more areas in the near future, bringing benefits to more patients.
