Merck's Breakthrough in RSV Antibody: Significant Reduction in Infant Respiratory Infections

ECHEMI 2024-07-29

On July 24, Merck & Co., the world's leading pharmaceutical company, announced a major scientific achievement: Their prophylactic monoclonal antibody to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) clesrovimab (trade name MK-1654) achieved very positive results in phase 2b/3 clinical trials. The main purpose of the antibody development is to provide a layer of protection for infants and young children against RSV disease.

According to the trial results, clesrovimab successfully met the established safety and efficacy endpoints in clinical trials. Specifically, the antibody performed particularly well on day 150, significantly reducing the incidence of Medically Attendanced Lower Respiratory Infections (MALRI) caused by RSV that required medical intervention. The achievement of this result undoubtedly brings new hope and possibility for the prevention and control of RSV infection in infants.

Merck is very encouraged by the results of the clinical trial and plans to submit the findings to regulatory authorities around the world for review. Merck expects that through these clinical data, it will be able to promote the development and application of clesrovimab worldwide as soon as possible. The smooth progress of this process will help reduce the risk of disease caused by RSV infection in infants and young children worldwide, improve the health of infants and young children, and bring benefits to society and families.
