Australia and New Zealand Propose to Approve Alpha-amylase from Genetically Modified Lichenybackerium as a Processing Aid
In pushing the frontiers of food technology, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) recently issued an important announcement that heralds the future of major changes in the food processing industry. On July 30, 2024, FSANZ detailed in its Announcement 297-24 application No. A1305, which seeks to approve the use of alpha-amylase derived from genetically modified Bacillus licheniformis as a processing aid. This innovative proposal aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of food processing while ensuring food safety for consumers.
According to FSANZ's notice, the new alpha-amylase will be used in the refining process of carbohydrates, especially in the production of drinking alcohol, to generate glucose syrup and other starch hydrolysis products. The application of this technology is expected to optimize existing production processes, reduce energy consumption, while reducing the environmental impact, reflecting Australia and New Zealand's positive stance on technological innovation and green development.
