Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued an important announcement on 30 July 2024, Notice 297-24, which details the contents of application A1304. The application seeks to approve endo-1,4-beta-xylanase, produced by the genetically modified Bacillus licheniformis, as a food processing aid to improve the efficiency of food production processes and product quality.

Endo-1, 4-β-xylanase is a biological enzyme whose primary function is to break down xylan, a polysaccharide commonly found in the cell walls of many plants. According to the notice, the introduction of the enzyme will be used in the production process of alcohol distillation, starch and gluten products.
