BASF Announces Major Restructuring: Ludwigshafen Site to Cease Production of Adipic Acid and Downstream Products by 2025, Fate of 180 Employees Uncertain!

ECHEMI 2024-09-02

BASF officially announced on August 29 that as an important part of the restructuring of the integrated site in Ludwigshafen, Germany, the company has decided to stop the production of adipic acid and its related downstream products at the site. BASF revealed that the production plant of adipic acid will be completely discontinued in 2025, while the production plant of cyclododecanone and cyclopentanone based on adipic acid feedstock will also cease operations in the first half of 2025. The restructuring is expected to affect about 180 employees.

In view of the significant decline in revenues in Europe, BASF implemented a series of specific measures aimed at reducing costs at its Ludwigshafen site in February 2023, including the reduction of adipic acid production capacity. In February, the company further announced additional cost reduction measures at the site.

BASF said that this decision is an important part of the long-term objective of the Ludwigshafen site's transformation and development strategy, which aims to ensure the company's competitiveness in the continuously changing market conditions. With a high sense of responsibility and foresight, BASF has always actively responded to market challenges and optimized resource allocation in order to achieve sustainable development and long-term stable growth.
