Evonik's New Expansion of Methionine in Singapore: The Shutdown Controversy and Environmental Lies, with Annual Capacity Increased by 34,000 Tons, but Carbon Footprint Only Reduced by 6%?
Recently, Evonik officially announced that the methionine MetAMINO production base expansion project located in Singapore has been successfully completed ahead of schedule. The project experienced a brief shutdown period between the fourth quarter of 2023 and the second quarter of 2024. At present, the MetAMINO production site in Singapore has fully resumed operation with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons, bringing the total annual production to 340,000 tons.
Through the implementation of a series of technological innovations and improvements, Evonik has significantly increased the operational efficiency of its methionine production line and converted the excess steam generated into electricity. As Evonik's partner on Jurong Island in Singapore, Linde Group designed, built and operated a 9 MW alkaline hydrogen electrolysis facility, which became the largest capacity hydrogen electrolysis facility installed in Singapore to date. By using green hydrogen to produce MetAMINO, Evonik demonstrates its strong commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. The carbon footprint of MetAMINO products produced at Evonik's Singapore site is 6% lower than before the expansion.
Fu Haiyan, Singapore's Minister for Sustainable Development and Environment and Minister in charge of Trade Relations in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, said: "Evonik's expansion will help address the two global challenges of climate change and food production in a sustainable way. By increasing production and reducing emissions, Evonik is committed to meeting the food needs of a growing population while effectively reducing its carbon footprint. Congratulations to Evonik for taking this crucial step towards a more sustainable future."
