Merck Lowers Growth Expectations in China Market, Concerns Arise Over Drug Development Setbacks

ECHEMI 2024-10-17

German tech giant Merck has revised its medium-term growth targets for its life sciences and healthcare businesses, anticipating improved growth prospects in the Chinese market. The change comes after the company suffered a series of setbacks in drug development. In an official statement, Merck revealed that they have lowered their growth forecast for the life sciences business, revising its previous estimate of 7-10% annual growth to 7-9%.

In the statement, Merck also noted that it had revised its outlook for its healthcare business due to "recently announced product line setbacks," changing its forecast to "modest growth" from its previous mid-single digit growth. This adjustment reflects the company's drug development challenges, particularly in cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS) drug development.

However, despite setbacks in drug development, Merck was optimistic about the medium-term prospects for its electronics division. Thanks to strong demand for chips for artificial intelligence applications, the company raised its medium-term growth target for its electronics division to 5-9% from the previous 3-6%. The increase reflects the company's strong performance in the electronics industry and the continued demand for high-performance chips.

Despite the challenges in drug development, Merck has demonstrated its ability to adapt to market changes and sustain business growth by adjusting business expectations and taking advantage of growth opportunities in emerging technology areas.
