Ineos Styrolution confirms it will not restart Sarnia plant
Styrenics materials supplier Ineos Styrolution recently confirmed it will not restart its styrene monomer production plant in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, which has been closed since April 2024.
This announcement follows Ineos Styrolution’s announcement on June 11, 2024, when the company decided to permanently close the Sarnia plant by June 2026 based on the economic benefits of the plant in the wider industry context. Operations in Sarnia have been closed since April 2024 due to a regulator’s order forcing the plant to declare force majeure.
Steve Harrington, CEO of Ineos Styrolution, said: “Since announcing the difficult decision to permanently close our Sarnia facility, we have undertaken an extensive assessment to determine the feasibility of a temporary restart of the facility. Ultimately, this assessment concluded that a temporary restart of the facility would not be operationally viable or economically justified. We are now focused on conducting a safe, responsible and compliant closure process and supporting our employees, contractors, customers and partners, including providing transition support for affected employees. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Sarnia team for their contribution to our business over the years.”
While a specific date for the closure of the facility has not yet been confirmed, Ineos Styrolution is working closely with all necessary parties and expects to complete decommissioning and an orderly wind-down by early Q4 2025.
