EU Major Food Regulation Update! Casein Iron Approved for Special Foods
According to the latest news from the Official Journal of the European Union, on October 31, 2024, the European Commission officially published the Regulation number (EU) 2024/2791. This new regulation amends and updates the previous Regulation (EC) No 609/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The main content of the revision is to allow the use of iron milk caseinate as a source of iron in certain foods for special medical purposes, but this provision does not apply to baby food. In addition, the revision also deals with whole-meal substitutes for weight control. Under the new regulations, iron caseinate can be added to these products as a source of iron to meet the nutritional needs of specific populations.
The publication of this new regulation marks another step forward in the regulation of food additives and nutrition content in the EU, aiming to provide consumers with more diverse healthy food choices. The effective date of the new regulation is the 20th day after its publication, which means that relevant enterprises and producers need to adjust their product formulations and labels within the specified time to ensure compliance with the new regulatory requirements.
