Canada Approves Harmful Genetically Modified Corn, Safety in Question!
On November 4, 2024, Health Canada officially released an important document regarding the approval of a specific genetically modified corn line - EH913 - for use in the food sector. This decision marks a new step for Canada in the field of genetically modified foods.
In fact, as early as 2022, Health Canada received an application for permission to market food from a new variety of corn. This new maize variety is the genetically modified maize strain EH913, which has remarkable characteristics, that is, it can effectively resist the invasion of pests, and can tolerate the herbicide phosphine oxalate. This characteristic makes EH913 potentially a great advantage in agricultural production.
To ensure that this genetically modified corn variety can be safely marketed as food in Canada, Health Canada scientists conducted a series of scientific assessments. These assessments aim to fully understand the properties of EH913 and the effects it may have on human health during consumption. The scientists conducted a thorough review of EH913 through rigorous experiments and data analysis.
After a long period of evaluation and research, Health Canada scientists have concluded that the genetic modification of this new corn variety does not pose a greater risk to human health than the corn varieties currently available on the Canadian market. In other words, EH913 is reliable in terms of safety and can be considered as safe as conventional corn varieties, and may even be superior in some ways. Based on this scientific assessment, Health Canada has finally approved EH913 for sale in food products.
This decision not only opens up new food options for Canadian consumers, but also gives agricultural producers new tools to address the challenges posed by pests and weeds. At the same time, it demonstrates Canada's rigorous attitude and expertise in the scientific evaluation and regulation of genetically modified products.
