EFSA Plans to Authorize Novel Food EPG, Limited Use May Spark Controversy
On November 15, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a public consultation document, number PC-1204, which seeks to authorise the use of esterified propoxylated glycerol (EPG) as a novel food, with a deadline of December 6, 2024. The main contents of the document are summarized as follows:
(1) Esterified propoxylated glycerol (EPG) is planned to be used as a fat substitute in confectionery coatings, especially for frozen dairy desserts and confectionery products;
(2) The recommended purpose and maximum dosage are: frozen dairy dessert: 34.5g / 100g; Chocolate candy coating: 30g / 100g; Candy coating: 34.5g / 100g.
