Major Changes to Infant Food Standards! CAC Announcement Triggers Nutritional Panic

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) published CL 2024/86-CAC on November 13, 2024, to revise a number of special dietary standards and to seek public comment, with a deadline of November 20, 2024. The main contents of the revision are as follows:

(1) Plan to establish the principle of nutrient reference value for older infant formula and infant food (6-36 months of age), and clarify the source and basis of data;

(2) Reference value requirements (NRVs-R) for some nutrients are planned. Please refer to the table below for specific information;

(3) It is planned to revise the Standard for Infant Formula and Infant Formula for Special Medical Use (CXS 72-1981) and update some component content requirements, such as adjusting the milk protein content from 0.45-0.7g/100kj to 0.43-0.72g/100kj. Vitamin K content was adjusted from 1-6.5μg/100kg to 0.96-6μg/100kg. The nutrient reference values are as follows:
