New Titanium Dioxide Alternative Moves Closer to Market
One of the more commercially relevant additive stories of the period came on March 10, when FoodNavigator reported that Seprify, a Cambridge University spin-out now based in Switzerland, is moving its cellulose-based whitening ingredient SilvaAlba from pilot validation toward industrial, procurement-ready supply. The ingredient is being positioned as a plant-based alternative to titanium dioxide, the whitening additive that has come under intense scrutiny over possible DNA-damage concerns and was banned by the EU as a food additive in 2022. FoodNavigator reported that Seprify has raised €13.4 million to help scale the ingredient.
The importance of this development goes beyond one startup. Titanium dioxide has become one of the defining examples of how food additive regulation can force technical reinvention. Manufacturers still want bright, stable whiteness in products such as confectionery, bakery, dairy alternatives, and beverages, but many replacement systems have trade-offs in cost, sensory impact, or performance. According to the report, Seprify’s approach uses cellulose from renewable wood pulp and a structure inspired by the light-scattering surface of a bright white beetle, allowing it to create a strong whitening effect without mineral pigments.
That technical angle matters because replacement ingredients only become commercially meaningful when they solve the industry’s practical problems, not just its regulatory ones. FoodNavigator said SilvaAlba is meant to deliver low replacement ratios, neutral taste, and broad application stability, which are exactly the points where many existing alternatives struggle. If those claims hold at industrial scale, the additive could become part of a larger shift away from controversial whitening agents and toward cleaner-label functional systems. March 10 did not bring a mass-market launch, but it did mark a credible step toward something the food industry still urgently needs: a replacement that works well enough to make titanium dioxide easier to leave behind.
